AltNet
AltNet is an informal federation of Hobbyist BBS networks that emerged in the mid-1990s as a response to the increasingly commercialized BBS ecosystem. Unlike commercial networks such as PortalHub or PortalTV, AltNet prioritizes privacy, decentralization, and operator autonomy, forming a loose confederation of independently operated bulletin board systems united by shared principles rather than commercial affiliation.
Origins and Philosophy
AltNet originated from a small group of hobbyist operators who sought to create an alternative to the dominant commercial BBS networks. Frustrated by the increasingly advertising-driven nature of major platforms and concerned about data privacy practices, these operators established informal connection agreements between their individual boards, creating what would become known as the AltNet federation. The network's name directly references its countercultural positioning—a deliberate alternative to mainstream networking.
Privacy and Decentralization
The defining characteristic of AltNet is its commitment to privacy and decentralization. Unlike OpenHub Federation platforms that maintain centralized user directories, AltNet member boards operate independently with no shared user database. Each operator maintains complete control over their board's data retention policies, user data handling, and content moderation decisions. This architectural approach means there is no central authority capable of compelling content removal or user data disclosure across the federation.
Technical Architecture
AltNet operates over CCNP transport rather than traditional IP networking, with member boards exchanging traffic through bilateral peering agreements. There is no formal membership structure—boards identify themselves as part of AltNet by including the network's shared tag in their directory listings. This organic, permissionless model reflects the federation's philosophical commitment to decentralized governance.
Cultural Significance
AltNet represents an important strand of the BBS ecosystem that prioritizes community autonomy over commercial viability. While smaller than commercial federations like Federation, AltNet has maintained a dedicated user base drawn to its privacy-respecting practices and operator-driven culture.
